Our Vision...
Eco-Río is a registered Non Profit Association founded in the year 2000 by concerned citizens and businesses that has the best interests of the Río Dulce at its very heart. Our primary objective is to preserve the environment, its natural resources and spectacular landscapes while promoting the sustainable development of the area as well as its inhabitants. The above includes a high degree of concern for the safety and satisfaction of our visitors.
The Rio Dulce has been a protected area since 1955 when it was declared a National Park surrounded by over 7200 hectares of wetlands and tropical rainforest. Eco-Río benefits not only the local Guatemalans but helps keep this area a prime cruising destination. We provide the major forum for the interface between the private and public sectors for issues like environment & tourism. We also monitor public and private sector actions that may have a negative effect on the area and act as a “watch dog institute” in a proactive fashion proposing solutions to everyday problems like traffic on the waterways, mitigation techniques for waste water and solid waste management, forestry and much more.
Eco-Río enjoys a long history of protecting the local ecology in and around the Río Dulce. Eco-Río was instrumental in preventing the construction of a wood chipping plant that was proposed at the current location of RAM Marina. The presence of a wood chipping plant would have had devastating effects on the local ecology. They were active in the oversight of activities at the Nickel Mine near El Estor. The efforts of Eco-Río answered the issue of illegal trash dumps by organizing the garbage barge on the river. This service was originally subsidized and is now a successful business in private ownership. Eco Río was and is active in addressing Security Issues on and around the Río Dulce.
